With 45 stores across the country and 1,300 staff, Decathlon UK is a leader in providing high-quality, affordable sports gear. Based on the Brackmills Estate, their UK distribution centre is not only a logistics hub, but a sporting one too. Here B2B Operations Leader, Adam Steel, reflects on why it’s not just a workplace; it’s a community united by a love of sport.
A centre built for growth
Decathlon’s site at Brackmills is our only UK distribution centre. We were previously based at Moulton Park, but we outgrew the site and it was time to move on.
We wanted a space that could support our growth and reflect our values. The move allowed us to expand our business and create dedicated sports facilities, including football pitches, tennis courts and a gym, transforming the workplace into an environment where sport and work truly go hand in hand.
Empowering a winning team
At Decathlon, autonomy is more than a buzzword. The company fosters a culture where staff are encouraged to take ownership of ideas, learning equally from our successes and failures. We are given the freedom to try new things. It’s how we grow and innovate and what keeps our staff engaged.
This approach is reflected in our hiring process. Interviews often include a question about a candidate’s favourite sporting moment, underscoring the importance of passion and drive. With staff representing 19 nationalities, our diverse workforce celebrates its cultural richness through monthly events featuring sport, food, and music.
A culture of connection through sport
Sport is not just Decathlon’s business; it’s our bond. Team meetings often conclude with a match or game, reinforcing the connection among colleagues. It is part of who we are. The vibe here is competitive, energetic, and fun. By combining our passion for sport, an unwavering commitment to sustainability, and a culture of innovation and inclusivity, we have created a great place to work. Our staff enjoy what they do, and it shows.
Sustainability and circularity
Sustainability is woven into our operations. Initiatives like "Second Life" repurpose returned or refurbished sportswear in partnership with charities, ensuring minimal waste. And initiatives like our “No tent left behind” with high-profile advocates like Jo Whiley championing the cause, allow customers to purchase a tent, use it for a festival, and return it for a gift card. We are passionate about reducing waste and reusing and recycling products wherever we can.
Proud supporters of Brackmills BID
As enthusiastic supporters of Brackmills Business Improvement District (BID), we have frequently hosted and regularly participate in events on the estate. We see our role in the Brackmills community as more than just a business presence - it’s about fostering connections, supporting our neighbours and inspiring wellbeing and physical activity.
